- Iowa State Legislature

The Iowa Constitution grants the state's lawmaking authority to a General Assembly consisting of a Senate and a House of Representatives. The 50 members of the Senate and 100 members of the House are elected by the people of Iowa.
- Department of Public Safety
Founded in 1939, the Iowa Department of Public Safety is the chief law enforcement agency for the state of Iowa. Headquartered in the Wallace State Office Building on the Capitol Complex in Des Moines, Iowa, and with 38 other facilities located around the State of Iowa, the Department of Public Safety employees more than 800 individuals, including over 600 sworn peace officers. The goal of the Department has remained constant since its inception: service to and protection of the people of Iowa.
- Office of the Secretary of State
The Iowa Secretary of State is an Advocate for Small Businesses in Iowa which strives to provide service to the citizens of Iowa by executing the following duties: Administer the filing of records of all businesses in the State of Iowa and of all liens and financial documents filed under the Uniform Commercial Code; Receive input from the business community and advocate change to improve government service and reduce bureaucracy on behalf of Iowa's small businesses; Coordinate and supervise elections and promote voter participation and education throughout Iowa; Issue and renew all commissions for Notaries Public; Publish the Iowa Official Register biennially and the Iowa Official Directory of Federal, State and County Officers annually; Receive, file and preserve the Acts of the General Assembly; preserve the Iowa constitution and other legal documents required by law; Process and file all oaths of office for elected and appointed officials; Co-sign with the Governor all commissions, proclamations, extraditions and land patents.
- Iowa Board of Parole
The Iowa Parole Board's statutory mission is to reintegrate into the community, offenders who can be released without detriment to the public or themselves and protect the community from offenders who are a threat to public safety.
- Department of Inspections and Appeals
The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (DIA) is responsible for coordinating and conducting audits, appeals, hearings, inspections, and investigations related to the operations of Iowa State Government. The Department also provides administrative support for five semi-autonomous entities.
