Ephedra
Ephedra has been linked to strokes, heart conditions, kidney disease, and other serious diseases. Nearly 1,200 adverse events involving ephedra have been reported. Three billion servings were sold in 1998, and it is estimated that from 4 to 15 million Americans take ephedra products. A panel of experts, hired by ephedra makers, claim that no serious health problems result if the product is taken as directed. However, many people ignore the manufacturers' directions and take more than 100mg of ephedra per day.
Importantly, ephedra-containing supplements may have very different doses than the labels on their bottles suggest.
